#NICEStories: KaleNele – Tradition in Thread, Purpose in Practice

With a quiet, grounded presence and a deep sense of purpose, KaleNele is a cultural enterprise rooted in tradition, collaboration, and care. Built by a small, hands-on team passionate about craft, culture, and design, KaleNele is committed to creating products through the revival and reinterpretation of traditional art forms, that help preserve India’s rich textile heritage while building sustainable livelihoods for the artisans behind them.

The journey of KaleNele begins with their people, the dyers, weavers, tassel makers, and embroiderers across North Karnataka who form the foundation of their collections. These artisans are not just collaborators but an essential part of the KaleNele ecosystem.

Unlike many labels, KaleNele doesn’t source finished textiles, they build them from scratch. The process starts with sourcing yarn, which is then dyed in-house and woven by a dedicated group of weavers who work closely with KaleNele. This intentional, hands-on approach allows the team to maintain creative integrity while nurturing long-term relationships with the makers.

The very name KaleNele reflects the brand’s deeper mission,‘Kale’ meaning art and ‘Nele’ meaning shelter in Kannada. It is a name that captures their essence: to be a shelter for art, where both craft and kaarigar are nurtured. At its core, KaleNele is a humble yet passionate effort to give uncontested identity to Karnataka’s weaving and craft traditions, many of which are fading. By reinterpreting indigenous art forms into vibrant lifestyle products, KaleNele is actively creating sustainable employment while breathing new life into these traditions.

Products with Soul and Story

KaleNele’s products are not simply items of design, they are living stories. Crafted with intention, each piece carries a blend of tradition and thoughtful innovation. With a contemporary design language layered over heritage techniques, every accessory or furnishing is a quiet celebration of craft.

Each motif, thread, and weave in a KaleNele product carries meaning. For example, in a piece of Khunn, one may find jowar seeds or even goddesses revered by weavers during monsoons, visual narratives inspired by nature and the everyday lives of local communities. These themes are not incidental but deeply embedded in the region’s cultural memory, and KaleNele strives to bring awareness to these motifs, traditions, and stories as a way of preserving them for generations to come.

Through contextual elements like the mission tag, customers get to understand the story of the product, the heritage of the textile, and the kaarigar behind it. It’s not just about selling an object; it’s about deepening the emotional connection between the user and the craft.

With Khunn and Ilkal weaving techniques and Kasuti hand embroidery as their current focus, KaleNele is dedicated to keeping these traditional practices vibrant and economically relevant. As the brand grows, they hope to engage with many more clusters across the country, reviving regional forms and ensuring their stories continue to be told.

Their product offerings span across categories  from clothing like sarees, cholees, dupattas, and stoles, to accessories such as fabric jewellery and statement bags, and home decor items like cushion covers, torans, hangings, and table runners. Each piece is handcrafted with thought, care, and love, representing a harmonious blend of form, function, and storytelling.

Learning by Doing: Lessons in Purpose-Led Growth

The journey of KaleNele has been marked by hands-on learning and values-driven decisions. Among their biggest takeaways:

  1. Balancing creativity and opportunity with structure and growth, which translates to consistent customer experiences.
  2. Recognising the value of saying no, whether to collaborations or product ideas that don’t align with their core mission.
  3. The ability to stay adaptable in the face of production delays or changing customer demand.
  4. Resourcefulness in working within the limitations of time, budget, and infrastructure.
  5. The importance of pacing growth realistically, staying focused, and being at peace with steady, meaningful progress.

These lessons form the foundation of KaleNele’s evolving practice, ensuring that each step forward remains thoughtful and true.

The Road Ahead: Expanding with Intention

KaleNele has already collaborated with like-minded brands and independent practitioners for capsule collections, workshops, and events that celebrate slow design and handmade processes. Looking forward, the team is excited to build:

  • Design-led partnerships that stretch the creative possibilities of traditional fabrics
  • Retail and concept store collaborations that offer their products visibility offline
  • Institutional or NGO partnerships that support skill development and craft livelihoods at the grassroots level

What stands out in KaleNele’s journey is how closely they engage with each artisan throughout the design and development process. This collaboration isn’t just about aesthetics, it is about ensuring that artisans feel encouraged, empowered, and inspired to pass their exquisite skills to future generations. These meaningful partnerships result in more than just beautiful products, they build relationships that last.

Why NICEorg Matters

To KaleNele, being part of NICEorg means entering a much-needed ecosystem that recognises the unique challenges of building a cultural enterprise in India. “It’s reassuring to be part of something that understands where we’re coming from and where we want to go,” the team shares.

NICEorg offers not just tools and frameworks for growth, but also a community of peers that fosters confidence and shared learning. For KaleNele, this connection reinforces their belief that it’s possible to grow strategically while staying rooted in their values and mission of nurturing craft and kaarigar.

KaleNele is more than a brand. It’s a heartfelt journey, a shelter for art, a revival of lost threads, and a celebration of the hands that keep our heritage alive.
